Birkenstock began as a family business in late 17th century Germany. The original contoured footbed, designed by Konrad Birkenstock in 1897, was the result of an already century-long tradition of family shoe-making. Birkenstock made their USA debut in 1966 when founder Margot Fraser began importing the innovative comfort sandals. She had fallen in love with the incredible support and relief offered by the unique shape of the contoured footbed and wanted to share this and the health benefits associated with proper footwear.
Birkenstock USA has been growing since 1966, and continues to develop new styles, repeatedly revolutionizing footwear wearability. The classic look of the Arizona sandal continues to be a favorite, but with additions like the Gizeh , Granada , the Boston Clog , and more, it's hard to have just one! While the fashion world today is embracing a laid back and carefree style, the clear consensus is that Birkenstock is the epitome of casual comfort.
